How to Care for Your Modal Hijab — And Keep It Soft for Years

There's something special about a modal hijab that's been well taken care of. The fabric stays soft, the drape stays fluid, and the color holds. But modal is a delicate fabric — and a few small habits can make the difference between a hijab that lasts years and one that pills, fades, or loses its shape after a handful of washes.

Here's everything you need to know to keep your modal hijabs looking and feeling their best.

Why Modal Needs a Little Extra Care

Modal is made from beech tree fibers, which gives it that signature silky softness and fluid drape. That same quality that makes it feel so good against your skin also means it responds better to gentle handling than to a hot machine wash and tumble dry. Think of it the way you'd think about a silk blouse — not high maintenance, just intentional.

Washing Your Modal Hijab

Hand washing is always the safest option. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water, add a small amount of mild detergent, and gently swirl the hijab through the water. Avoid wringing or twisting — instead, press the water out gently and lay it flat.

If you prefer machine washing, use the delicate cycle with cold water and place your hijab inside a mesh laundry bag. This protects the fabric from friction and prevents it from tangling with heavier items.

What to avoid: hot water, harsh detergents, and bleach. Heat breaks down modal fibers over time and is the main reason hijabs lose their softness.

Drying

Always lay your modal hijab flat to dry, away from direct sunlight. Direct sun causes colors to fade faster — especially in deeper tones like Mulberry, Sienna, and Black Obsidian. If you need to speed up drying, lay it on a clean dry towel and gently press to absorb moisture.

Avoid the dryer entirely if you can. The heat and tumbling motion can cause pilling and shrinkage over time.

Ironing and Steaming

Modal wrinkles lightly but releases them easily. If your hijab needs a quick refresh, steam is your best option — hold a steamer a few inches from the fabric and let the steam do the work. If you're using an iron, set it to the lowest heat setting and iron on the reverse side of the fabric.

Never iron directly on a print. For our printed modal styles like Lavender Bloom or Teal Watercolor, always flip the hijab over before applying any heat.

Storing Your Hijabs

Fold your modal hijabs loosely and store them flat in a drawer, or hang them over a hanger without a tight fold. Avoid compressing them under heavy items for long periods — this can leave permanent creases in the fabric.

If you're storing them long term, keep them away from direct sunlight and moisture.

The Short Version

  • Wash cold, by hand or on delicate
  • Skip the dryer — lay flat to dry
  • Steam over iron when possible
  • Store loosely, away from sunlight
  • Treat it gently and it will last for years

Your modal hijab is an investment in how you feel every day. A little care goes a long way.
